ConservationCouncil gives advice on the designation of Conservation Areas (CAs) and more recently has been consulted about Areas of Townscape Character (ATCs). In many instances the ATCs can be the forerunner of CAs. A current list of CAs and ATCs is on the Planning Service website The management of CAs has been much to the fore of Councils agenda and indeed, in 1995 the HBC produced a report on the state of Northern Ireland's Conservation Areas which highlighted the poor condition of many of our historic buildings. The Heritage Lottery Fund's Townscape Heritage Initiative has assisted greatly in the regeneration of many of these areas but there is still a lack of general recognition of the contribution CAs make to towns and villages and economic regeneration.
